France World Cup winner says Liverpool ‘suckers’ to pay £60m for young defender Jaquet

Christophe Dougary says Liverpool have ‘no justification’ for spending so much on unproven player

Former France forward Christophe Dugry explains Liverpool As “suckers” for shelling out £60million to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacket.

The France Under-21 international’s move to Anfield was confirmed last night and will spend the remainder of the current Ligue 1 season at Rennes before joining Liverpool in the summer.

Jackett has made just 36 appearances in the French top flight but that has not stopped Liverpool, who beat off competition from Chelsea to land him in the Premier League.

Dougherty is delighted that Rennes managed to secure such a large fee but questions Liverpool’s thinking.

he said RMC Sport: “This is not meant to offend the player, honestly, it’s not his fault at all, and we wish him the best because he’s a good player. But when you have abusers like that…well done to Reigns.

“Rance managed to find a suitor like Liverpool who were (willing to pay) €70 million (£60m).”

The deal for Jackett, 20, was the biggest of the January window which, while not as extravagant as in previous years, again saw the Premier League outperform its European rivals.

And it’s not healthy, according to 1998 World Cup winner Dougherty, who added: “Let them continue, all these English clubs, sending millions of euros. It’s not just a two-tier football situation anymore, it’s a football that has lost its mind.

“Let’s stop trying to pretend there’s any justification for it. There’s no justification. I don’t know what’s going on. It’s ridiculous! No, it’s not supply and demand. It’s ridiculous! It’s ridiculous!”

‘The pressure will be on Jackets at Liverpool’

Dougherty fears the size of the fee could present a problem for the Jackets when he appears for Liverpool in pre-season.

The former Barcelona, AC Milan and Birmingham star added, “Poor Jacket, this transfer can put a lot of pressure on him.

“The poor kid, who is definitely a very good player, will arrive with a lot of pressure. His performance will be looked at differently, even if he doesn’t deserve it.

“For those of us who know football, let’s not try to justify this amount because Liverpool have money or whatever. That’s pointless!”
