Saimemory, a subsidiary of the multinational investment giant Softbanksigned a cooperation agreement with an American chip manufacturer Intel Corporation The companies announced Tuesday to advance the commercialization of next-generation memory technology.
The collaboration focuses on next-generation memory technology to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. This work is currently known as the Z-Angle Memory Project, or ZAM.
According to SoftBank, the prototype is expected to be launched in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2028, with commercialization targeted for fiscal 2029 Press release.
After the news was announced, SoftBank’s shares rose 3.13%, and Intel’s shares rose 5% in overnight trading on Robinhood.
Founded in December 2024, Saimemory will leverage Intel’s memory technology and expertise, particularly its initiatives as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Memory Technology Initiative.
The program focuses on developing core technologies for advanced memory. Intel’s involvement specifically targets performance and energy efficiency improvements for next-generation dynamic random access memory (DRAM) used in computers and servers.
“Standard memory architectures cannot meet the needs of artificial intelligence,” Dr. Joshua Fryman, Intel Fellow and CTO of Intel Government Technology, said in a statement.
He added that Intel has developed a new memory architecture and assembly method that can improve DRAM performance while reducing power consumption and cost, allowing for wider adoption of the technology over the next decade.
The collaboration comes at a time when demand for memory from artificial intelligence-related applications is surging. This demand far outstrips supply, triggering shortages throughout the memory supply chain.
The ZAM program’s emphasis on energy efficiency also reflects growing concerns about the enormous energy consumption required for AI computing.
