Like almost every other tech company under the sun, Mozilla has been around jamming generative AI features into its products. The organization now recognizes that not everyone wants things like this plagiarism machines chatbots in the Firefox sidebarso it gives you the option to turn all of that off.
On February 24 (or earlier in Firefox Nightly builds), Mozilla will release Firefox 148which will include the AI controls section of the desktop browser settings. From here, you can block current and future generative AI features, or enable only selected tools.
In the jump, you have the option to disable (or enable) sidebar chatbots, automatic translation and alt text generation for PDFs. You can also nix a tool called AI-enhanced tab grouping (which offers suggestions of related tabs and group names), as well as webpage previews which shows “key points” before you click on a link. If you want to remove all of them – and so Firefox doesn’t bother you with pop-ups and notifications about current and future AI features – just make sure the “Block AI” toggle is on.
Maybe Mozilla knows that, instead of having AI cruft that soaks up resources and causes apps to break, what most people want is a fast, secure and smooth web browser.
