If you’re watching “The Squire,” last night’s episode on A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsyou know the secret as anyone who has read George RR Martin Stories of Dunk and Eggs The novels have been coming since the show started.

Before the season premiere, showrunner Ira Parker spoke more about the revelation—and what motivated the character in question to hide their true identity—to a group of reporters, including io9.

As we already know, Egg—the boy whose tenacity earned him an audition to be squire for Ser Duncan the Tall—actually was. Aegon Targaryen. He was no orphaned stableboy; he was a true prince who shaved his head to hide his famous Targaryen white-blonde hair. As made clear throughout Game of Thrones, House of the Dragonand now A Knight of the Seven KingdomsThe Targaryens are known to be cruel and greedy. not all of them, but Egg’s immediate family (except for his uncle, Baelor) certainly fit the bill. So is there more to Egg’s decision to go into hiding than just escaping his royal torment?

“(The) question actually came up a few times in the development process: why is Egg going after Dunk? Why is he chasing this guy? Parker said. “I talked to George a little bit about it: did he understand Dunk’s honor? Is that it? … George said something that opened it up for me. He said, ‘Children feel disappointment worse than adults … The egg doesn’t get the thing it wants, (and) in a very princely way, he says, “Well, I can think.”

In other words, Eggs Granted Wanted to go see the fight at Ashford Meadow, but as we saw in one episode, he was stuck hanging around on the side of the road. When he realizes that Dunk is heading to the tournament, he sees an opportunity for the squire-less hedge knight.

“In many ways, Dunk was unsuspecting. “Dunk was the perfect person to go and pretend because he wasn’t going to many important camps where Egg could be found or captured.”

Now that the truth about Egg’s Targaryen is out, it’s safe to assume that his relationship with Dunk will change quite a bit. “The Squire” ends with a shocked Dunk realizing that Egg has been lying to him this whole time. But because we know there are more adventures ahead for the duo—including another season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms coming next year—surely the crack will heal quickly.

As we’ll see in the coming weeks, Parker teased, “I think (Egg made) an honest boyish decision, and Dunk called him out on that because part of adulthood, part of this process of being a mentor to a young man or a mentor to a squire, is that your actions have consequences.”

And, lest we forget, “(Egg) is young. He needs to be forgiven. He is, at this point, unmolded clay. I mean, he’s officially a Targaryen prince, but he’s not yet.”

Dunk and Egg will face the Targaryen bombshell in the fourth episode, which arrives earlier this week—Friday, February 6—on HBO Max. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will also hit HBO at its usual time, on Sunday, February 8.
