Teofimo Lopez Lost WBO super lightweight title Shakur Stevenson Saturday.
The two faced off at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Stevenson once again delivered a world-class performance and won an overwhelming unanimous decision victory And became a four-weight world champion in the process.
Lopez struggled to handle anything Stevenson threw at him over the course of 12 rounds, and father and trainer Teofimo Sr revealed exactly why he thought that was the case.
Talk to MiaochouLopez Sr. explained that he was pleased with how training camp went, but he felt his son wasn’t following the right game plan and conversations about potential future fights affected his thinking.
“Everything was good, the sparring was my motivation going into this fight and I was 100 percent sure we were going to win. For some reason, my son’s game plan didn’t go the way I told him. His rhythm should be different and we should stop Shakur from doing what he does best.
“Congratulations to him for winning, but that’s not my son. I think the network, everybody, the media, everything leading up to that game and talking about the winner in May, I think that probably had an impact on him.”
Lopez has now announced that he plans to move up to 147 pounds following his loss to Stevensonwhere he will attempt to become a three-division world champion.
