Brent Jones knows what it takes to be successful at tight end. Jones, a three-time Super Bowl champion during his 11 seasons with the 49ers, said he is impressed by the talent at the position in today’s NFL.

Jones was interviewed on behalf of Athletes in Action and Fox News Digital Super Bowl Breakfast. He has been appointed to host the 38th annual event, which is scheduled to be held next week in Santa Clara, California.

Several tight ends are having strong seasons in 2025, with five players having at least 800 receiving yards in the regular season.

Travis Kelce reaches historic milestone in possible final game of NFL career, but noncommittal about future

“I think it’s really exciting to see this location,” Jones said. “And you do have Kelkes, kind of the older guys … (players like Zach Ertz) who have been around a long time. And then you have the middle-aged guys. I think George Kittle is as good as anybody. And then the two up-and-comers … (Tyler Warren and) Brock Bowles — he’s been hurt a little bit, but when he’s healthy, he’s as good as anybody.”

Pitts surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in his rookie season, but then struggled in his second season, which ended prematurely due to injury. Pitts was then plagued by several years of inconsistency. While he experienced some ups and downs in 2025, he put together a series of dominant performances that were arguably his best since his first year in the league.

Jones praised Pitts’ talent and believes the 25-year-old is on the verge of unlocking his full potential.

“Kyle Pitts… I’ve had him on my fantasy team for a few years now and I thought, ‘This is going to be the year… he’s going to break out!’ I’ve seen games where he was dominant, and then I’ve seen games where he wasn’t used. I guess I have to be around him and the team, but I still feel like he’s on the cusp. He’s going to break out somewhere. If he leaves Atlanta and breaks out, it’s going to be really hard.”

“I don’t know if it’s a scheme issue. I’m not sure if it’s by design or if the offensive coordinator just doesn’t use a tight end in their overall scheme. But that kid is too athletic and too much of a specimen to not break out in some way, shape or form.”

McBride is a designated starter on this year’s NFC Pro Bowl roster, while Kittle is the second player selected to the conference. Kittle injured his Achilles tendon in the Niners’ wild-card round win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Kittle was replaced by Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson.
