Carlos Alcaraz He became the youngest player to win his first career Grand Slam Australian Open title by defeating Novak Djokovic in four sets.
After Djokovic took the first set 6–2 at Melbourne Park, Alcaraz stormed back to win the next three sets including the fourth in which the Spaniard eventually won 7–5 despite a spirited performance from his opponent.
Djokovic, 16 years Alcaraz’s senior, remains on 24 Grand Slams as his bid to break Margaret Court’s record for most wins continues.
Alcaraz took to the court in jubilation to win a dramatic Australian Open final, winning 2-6 6-2 6-3 7-5 in Melbourne.
The Spaniard came under early pressure as Djokovic leaned on his experience to take control of the opening set.
However, Alcaraz steadily strengthened herself from the baseline, raising her level as the match progressed and eventually defeated the fourth-seeded Serb to claim her seventh Grand Slam crown.
The victory places Alcaraz in an elite group, becoming only the ninth person in history to complete the full set of major titles in Melbourne, Paris, London and New York.
Djokovic’s pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title continues. She is similar to Australia’s Margaret Court, who made an appearance at Rod Laver Arena following her victory at the 2023 US Open.
As the latter stages of his career approach, opportunities for Djokovic to cement his claim as the greatest player in the game are becoming increasingly limited.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz and Italy’s Janic Sinner have established themselves as leading figures in men’s tennis over the past two seasons. Alcaraz’s success on Melbourne’s hard courts means the two have now shared the last nine major titles between them.
