Earlier this week, Trump warned Iraq that Washington would withdraw its support if Maliki was chosen as Iraq’s next prime minister, the latest step in a growing wave of interference by Trump or members of his administration in other countries’ politics.
almaliki Rejected Trump’s threats In a post on X on Wednesday, he denounced “the blatant interference of the United States in Iraq’s internal affairs” and insisted he would not withdraw his candidacy for the top job.
Trump has been waging a campaign to curb the influence of Iran-linked groups in Iraq, which has long walked a tightrope between its two closest allies, Washington and Tehran.
Maliki, 75, is a senior figure in the Shia Islamist Dawa party. His tenure as prime minister from 2006 to 2014 was marked by power struggles with Sunni and Kurdish rivals, corruption allegations and growing tensions with the United States.
He stepped down in 2014 after the Islamic State (ISIS) overran much of the country, but remained an influential political figure, leading the Rule of Law coalition and maintaining close ties with Iran-backed factions.
The United States has significant influence over Iraq because the country’s oil export revenue is largely deposited at the New York Federal Reserve Bank, an arrangement agreed upon after the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 and toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
