Chelsea 3-2 West Ham: Liam Roniol understands fans’ boos but hopes to make ‘best decision’ in club history Football News

Chelsea boss Liam Roniol says fans were right to boo him at the end of the first half against West Ham United but hopes hiring him was the “best decision” the club has ever made.

The boos at Stamford Bridge were deafening when Anthony Taylor struck out at the end of the first 45 minutes as the Hammers cruised to a 2-0 victory over a mediocre Blues side who made seven substitutions.

The reaction in the stands was so great that Roberto Sanchez and Trevor Chalobah appeared to get into heated arguments with some supporters as they trudged off the pitch at half-time.

The introduction of key players at half-time transformed the game, with captain Enzo Fernandez completing the comeback in second-half stoppage time as Stamford Bridge went from despair to jubilation in the space of 45 minutes.

“I have to say the fans were really good in the second half,” Rognior said at the post-match press conference.

“They were right to boo. I would have booed us in the first half. Collectively, our performance was nowhere near where it needed to be in terms of our energy and our decision-making.

“Seeing them after 45 minutes, they were so happy and delighted with what they saw as a team, it made me very proud. I said to the players at half-time, ‘We can create probably the worst feeling of the season and the best feeling of the season’. I thought they were outstanding in the second half.”

The victory was Chelsea’s first in the Premier League as they overturned a two-goal half-time deficit, allowing them to climb to fourth in the Premier League table.

This could prove to be a pivotal moment in the early stages of Ronnie Orr’s Chelsea career.

“I hope they will ultimately say (hiring him) was the best decision the club has ever made,” he added.

“But I can’t focus on that. It’s a very proud club with incredible tradition and a recent history of winning trophies.

“They want that and I want that. For a manager to not get a lot of playing time in the middle of a season and have six wins in seven games is not a bad way to start.

“As long as the team shows fight, energy and intensity in the second half, the fans will show they are with us and they will support us.”

Analysis from Sky Sports’ Callum Bishop:

If you asked every Chelsea fan at Stamford Bridge at half-time what they thought the score would be at full-time, no one would have predicted it. The atmosphere was unsettled before Liam Rosenior turned the game on his head as he turned to the bench.

Seven changes were made to the starting line-up, seemingly in preparation for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal. But it looks like Ronnie Orr has brought down the academy. His players lacked sharpness and ideas. Alejandro Garnacho only sent two through balls in 45 minutes of playing time.

Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana came on and suddenly Chelsea looked a different team. All three were involved in the goal. But you can’t ignore the fact that Ronnie Orr has a problem.

“We all know the (regular) starting lineup, but the guys who aren’t in it are nowhere near the starting lineup,” Rob Green was correct.

Chelsea’s best team can compete with any team in the Premier League. But Saturday proved that taking away some of those ingredients is a recipe for disaster.
