Samsung’s very first Galaxy The Z TriFold went on sale last Friday, but this sold out in minutes. it folding the phone different from the 7th generation Galaxy Z Fold7 in that its screen can expand to a large 10 inches, turned it’s a proper tablet. That also means it commands a much higher price of $2,899. This is the first device of its kind here in the West, although Huawei has its own version in China.

You must sign up on Samsung.com to receive notifications when the next batch of Galaxy Z TriFolds is available. The company says it has limited units at select Samsung Experience Stores across the US in states like New York, Texas, California, and Minnesota.

Leak Gives Us A Look at Google’s Aluminum OS

Google has not been quiet about announcing its future plans combines Android and Chromebook into an operating system, reportedly known as Aluminum OS inside. But now we can take a first look at what it looks like, as taken 9 to 5 Google. True, the view is somewhat limited, but a couple of official images and a video were taken from a bug report that revealed the interface, which has since been removed by Google.

A quick look shows that Aluminum OS really feels like Android and ChromeOS stitched together. The windowing and browser elements feel pulled from ChromeOS, while the rest of the interface seems to take a lot of cues from Android. Specifically, the taskbar and the start screen are like the desktop mode of Android 16. The video shows two instances of Google Chrome running in split-screen, a common setup for Chromebooks, before briefly opening the Google Play Store in a separate window. Either way, as we’ve seen here, Aluminum OS may not feel like a significant difference from what’s available. That’s important if Google hopes to keep the Chromebook business going in education markets.

While Aluminum OS will reportedly replace ChromeOS eventually, which could take years, and Chromebooks themselves aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. But rumors indicate that we will see an official launch of its cross-platform operating system later this year as Google gradually integrates its platforms. —Luke Larsen

Vivaldi’s New Update Avoids AI

Vivaldi, one alternative web browserrecently released an update to the tab’s organization tools, but the update is more notable for what it doesn’t include: AI. “As every major browser races to cram AI assistants into their products, Vivaldi is throwing a middle finger at the whole approach,” WROTE Vivaldi CEO Jon von Tetzchner.

With the Google Chrome browser now integrating the company’s Gemini 3 LLM model to handle tasks like booking flights and finding apartments, Vivaldi positions itself as a browser that remains AI-free. Instead, Vivaldi plans to duplicate the tools for people because “human intelligence, with really powerful tools, beats artificial algorithmic assistants every time,” Tetzchner said.

The new “powerful tools” in this release include several improvements to Tab Tiling, Vivaldi’s feature for having two tabs (two web pages, or more) side by side in the same window. Vivaldi 7.8 adds a new feature that allows you to tile tabs using drag and drop. Grab any tab in your tab bar and drag it to the current tab, and Vivaldi will tile both sides. Where you drag it will determine how the tab is tiled, to the left, right, top, or bottom, depending on where you want it.

Other new features in this update include easier access to Vivaldi’s integrated mail client and a user-requested feature that allows you to restrict pin tabs to a domain. Vivaldi 7.8 will be downloaded from the Vivaldi website. —Scott Gilbertson

Samsung Creates a Sustainable Screen

Samsung is always experimenting with new display technology, but fans of sustainability are especially interested in the latest innovation: bio-resin based on phytoplankton in the screens. The material is part of a new color e-paper display from Samsung, where it is used in the housing.

“The display housing has been independently verified by global safety and sustainability certification organization UL as consisting of 45 percent recycled plastic and 10 percent phytoplankton-based bio-resin,” Samsung said. “This material change was made as an alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics, which can reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing process by more than 40 percent.”
