liverpool Before the transfer window closed on February 2, the two sides discussed strengthening the defensive lineup.
Liverpool face defensive injury crisis
As the defending Premier League champions, this season is hardly what many people expected of Liverpool. With the exception of Hugo Ekitic, most of Liverpool’s other big summer signings have struggled with form, fitness or both at Anfield so far.
as Liverpool continue to be linked with potential further additionsthere is a lot of focus on their defensive options.
The club had targeted Marc Gueye before he moved to Manchester City as they had suitable senior centre-backs to choose from, but also had no shortage of rags.
Elsewhere in the defence, Jeremie Frimpong has faced injury problems since arriving in the summer, while Conor Bradley is also out for the season after picking up an injury against Arsenal.
Ahead of the team’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United, Slott revealed little about the team’s plans before the end of the transfer window, saying, according to British Broadcasting Corporation: “If we have found a player that we think can help us and the number is possible, then we will do it. These conversations took place not far from here, but not in this room“.
Now, it’s been reported that Liverpool have held talks over the potential player’s arrival with just days left in the winter transfer window.
Liverpool in ‘dialogue’ about signing right-back
Talking about his official Youtube Channel reporter Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool have held discussions with Inter Milan about signing a star defender. Romano noted that the Reds are “discussing” the possibility of bringing in a new right-back in the coming days, before specifically mentioning Denzel Dumfries.
“Liverpool had a conversation with Inter Milan today. There was a club-to-club conversation with Inter Milan. The relationship is very good.
“So, from what I understand, Liverpool inquired about Denzel Dumfries. The release clause is not valid in January. The release clause is around €20-25 million and is only valid in the summer.
“But the understanding of the story is that Liverpool have inquired about players and injuries.”
With both Bradley and Frimpong injured, it is crucial for Liverpool to strengthen their right-back options. Denzel Dumfries has been an Inter Milan player since 2021 and has been a star player for the Italian giants, helping Inter reach two Champions League finals in three years from 2023 to 2025.
Although close to returning, Dumfries missed most of the season due to an ankle injury. According to Romano, Liverpool have “inquired” about Inter’s current situation at Dumfries and the two clubs clearly have a good relationship. Recent reports suggest that the Italian giants are looking to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones to bolster their ranks in the second half of the season.
Liverpool appear unlikely to negotiate a deal for Dumfries despite their interest. Romano said the Reds wanted a loan and the Italians didn’t want it at all. The Dutchman’s release clause will only come into effect in the summer, which could further deter Liverpool from making a bid. Slaughter’s side will likely be looking for further depth at right guard as they prepare for the remainder of the season. However, it appears they will have to look elsewhere.
