The Justice Department has opened a federal civil rights investigation the shooting of Alex PrettiThe Minneapolis resident was killed Saturday by Border Patrol officers, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Friday.
“We’re looking at everything that can shed light on what happened that day and in the days and weeks leading up to it,” Blanche said during a news conference.
Blanche did not explain why the DOJ decided to open an investigation into Pretti’s murder, but said a similar investigation was not necessary in the January 7 death. by Renee Goodwho was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis. He said only Friday that the Civil Rights Division does not investigate every law enforcement shooting and that there must be circumstances and facts that “require an investigation.”
“President Trump has repeatedly said, ‘Of course, this is something we’re going to investigate,'” Blanche said of the Pretti shooting.
Steve Schleicher, a Minneapolis-based attorney representing Pretti’s parents, said Friday that “the family’s focus is on a fair and impartial investigation that examines the facts surrounding his murder.”
The FBI will take over the federal investigation
The Department of Homeland Security also said Friday that the FBI will lead the federal investigation into Pretti’s death.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem first disclosed the transfer in which the agency led the investigation during a Fox News interview Thursday night. His department previously said Homeland Security Investigations, a unit of the department, would lead the investigation.
“We will continue to follow the investigation that the FBI is leading and give them all the information they need to bring that to a conclusion, and make sure the American people know the truth of the situation and how we can continue to protect the American people,” Noem said, speaking to Fox host Sean Hannity.
Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said Homeland Security Investigations will assist the FBI in the investigation. In fact, Customs and Border Protection, which is part of DHS, is conducting its own internal investigation into the shooting, in which two officers shot Pretti.
DHS did not immediately respond to questions about when the change was made or why. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
It was not immediately clear whether the FBI would share information and evidence with Minnesota state investigators, which it has so far it’s freezing outside in the federal investigation.
In the same interview, Noem appeared to distance himself statements he made shortly after the shooting, claims Pretti brandished a weapon and aggressively approached officers.
Several videos that have emerged of the shooting contradict the claim, showing that the intensive care nurse only had her mobile phone in her hand. while the officials beat him to the groundwith one removing a gun from the back of Pretti’s pants while another officer began firing into his back.
Pretti has a state permit to legally carry a concealed weapon. At no point did he appear to achieve this, the videos show.
The videos surfaced in a previous dispute
The agency’s change comes after two more videos surfaced of an earlier altercation between Pretti and federal immigration officials 11 days before his death.
The Jan. 13 videos show Pretti yelling at federal vehicles and at one point appear to spit before kicking out a car’s taillight. A struggle ensued between Pretti and several officers, during which he was forced to the ground. Pretti’s winter coat came off, and he either broke or the officers let him go and he ran.
When he turned away from the camera, what appeared to be a gun could be seen on his waist. At no point did the videos show Pretti reaching for the gun, and it’s unclear whether federal agents saw it.
Schleicher, the Pretti family’s attorney, said Wednesday that the initial dispute did not lead to the shooting more than a week ago.
In a post on his Truth Social platform early Friday morning, President Donald Trump suggested that videos of the earlier incident undermined the narrative that Pretti was a protesting peacefully when he was shot.
“Agitator and, perhaps, insurrectionist, Alex Pretti’s stock was lost in the recently released video of him screaming and spitting in front of a calm and controlled ICE Officer, and then madly kicking a brand new and very expensive government vehicle, so fast and violently, in fact, that the taillight broke,” Trump posted. “This was a display of abuse and rage, for all to see, crazy and out of control. The ICE Officer was calm and cool, not an easy thing to be under the circumstances!”
