Bulgaria’s entry into the single currency of the EU: a historic shift




On January 1, Bulgaria officially joined the eurozone, becoming the 21st country to join the single European currency. The introduction of the euro in Sofia brings hopes of major economic benefits, but it also comes at a time of deep political polarization and mass anti-corruption protests, which have culminated in the resignation of both the government and the country’s president.
