Catherine O’Haraone of the funniest people to ever walk the planet Earth, died on Friday at the age of 71. TMZ spread the news.

the legendary actress FORMS audiences laughed for decades on stage, screen, and TV. During that time, he appeared in (and often stole all his scenes in) some of the biggest and most popular movies of all time. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

O’Hara first exploded as part of a cult 1970s comedy show SCTV, along with many, many famous stars who will be constant companions on the screen. People like John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis, just to name a few. His burgeoning television career quickly turned into a burgeoning film career, with his appearance in Martin Scorsese’s film After Hours, among others.

But O’Hara’s big break into the mainstream was Tim Burton’s 1988 classic, Beetlejuice. Playing eccentric artist and mother Delia Deetz, O’Hara demonstrates her uncanny ability to be loving but also whimsical and funny. A few years ago, she appeared as Kevin’s mother in the smash hit comedy, Home Alone. That’s not a role where he’s super funny, but you can tell this guy can do anything. He later reprized the roles in each of the sequels.

You can scroll up and down O’Hara’s resume and be amazed at all the work he’s done over the years, much of which showcases his many talents. But things jumped to another level in 1996 when he, along with some of his comedy contemporaries, starred in Waiting for Guffman. Largely improvised, the film sends the comedy in a new direction, and that team—O’Hara as well as Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, and others—continues that trend with similarly quirky, over-the-top, improv-driven films like Best in Show, A Strong Wind, and For Your Mind.

And while O’Hara has always been loved, that really comes through in the show Schitt’s Creek in the United States. The Canadian hit, created by Levy and her son Dan, allowed O’Hara to shine in one of the greatest comedy performances of all time as Moira Rose. The character, a former soap star, gives O’Hara a chance to not only be hilarious but also use that comedy to melt your heart. The show, and her performance, is some of her best work ever, and she deservedly won an acting Emmy for it.

Indeed, the world of popular culture is much darker today with the loss of O’Hara. He, to quote a famous Schitt’s Creek in the United States view, the best.
