Many believe the Brooklyn product toppled Taylor with the best performance of his career, while others believe he looked even more impressive against Vasily Lomachenko.
This was considered a huge upset in 2020, when Lopez points to “The Matrix” and cemented his crown at 135 pounds, but lost the crown to George Kambosos Jr. the following year.
While Lopez performed well against Taylor and Lomachenko, he struggled to provide the same spark in several other fights.
Atlas says this can be explained by the 28-year-old’s mentality, which tends to change depending on the level of opponents he faces.
One might suspect, though, that Lopez is firing on all cylinders ahead of his clash with Stevenson, and if he is, Atlas could see their showdown unfold in a highly competitive fashion.
talking about Battle with Teddy AtlasThe Hall of Fame coach and analyst refused to deny the possibility of an upset.
“How is (Lopez) mentally? He has good days and bad days. His father has been with him throughout his career.
“Love him (or) hate him, his dad has been a part of him getting these world titles. (But Lopez) has been up and down mentally.
“Where will he be (against Stevenson)? He seemed to be in a really good spot when he fought Lomachenko.
“If he’s in a good position, I think this might be the first time Shakur Stevenson has someone who can match his athleticism.
“(Lopez) might force Shakur out of his comfort zone. I know it sounds ridiculous, but he might even rival Shakur in boxing (skills) and do frustrating things.”
While Lopez is the defending champion, Stevenson, who hopes to become a four-weight world champion, has emerged as a considerable favorite ahead of their clash.
