Newcastle United There is reportedly high interest in one particularly promising talent from Spain ahead of the transfer deadline.
Howe drops transfer update ahead of January deadline
This summer, Newcastle United brought in Nick Waltermade and Eoin Wiesa to bolster their forward strength in the absence of Alexander Isak.
The pair each showed flashes of brilliance, but it was clear the Magpies didn’t have much depth outside of that pair. William Osula has had the fewest minutes this season, Newcastle constantly linked with new attackers.
However, Newcastle United have had a quiet winter so far, no doubt partly due to their big spending in the summer. Manager Eddie Howe has criticized profit and sustainability rules on more than one occasion, which hamper his team’s ability to spend in the market.
Howe had previously downplayed the possibility of new signings but ahead of the February 2 deadline he was still thinking in the same vein, stressing that the club would not be able to operate at full capacity ahead of this month’s trip to Liverpool.
“I don’t expect that to change, but there’s still time for that to happen over time“.
Despite the 48-year-old’s lack of optimism, his side have now been linked with a late move for the talented rookie.
Newcastle eyeing promising Barcelona talent
according to sports witnessNewcastle have been scouting Europe for promising young talent. It now appears Barcelona midfielder Guille Fernandez is the latest target to be chased by Newcastle, who have a “significant” interest in the teenager.
Fernandez is only 17 years old Shares the same agent as Ramin YamarIn 2018, he joined the famous La Masia Youth Academy and has made steady progress in his development. 2024, Scouting Jacek Kulig Describing the midfielder as a “great” player.
The midfielder took part in Barcelona’s pre-season tour but suffered an ankle injury early in the match with Barcelona B. As a result, Fernandes has made just six starts in all competitions so far this season.
Fernandez is clearly a technically gifted player and he showed that in pre-season. Newcastle’s interest in the midfielder is understandable as he is a highly regarded prospect from Catalonia, but they are not the only club keeping an eye on Fernandes. German giants Borussia Dortmund are also reportedly interested in the teenager.
Despite Newcastle’s interest, they may find it almost impossible to complete the deal before the transfer window closes. Barcelona have reportedly told Fernandes that he will not leave the club this winter, proving the respect they have for the midfielder.
Fernandes would undoubtedly be an exciting addition for the Magpies, but it seems the Tyneside club will have to look elsewhere if they wish to add depth to their midfield.
