Snap spun off its AR glasses into a separate business

This will enable Snap to more quickly secure investors and partnerships for its wearables, as well as grow Specs into a separate brand while running it within Snap Inc. The Information Reportedly in the middle of 2025, Snap is considering ways to raise money outside for its AR glasses to better compete with Meta, which has more money to spend on development. It has considered spinning off the business before.

“The details launch at an important time, as artificial intelligence is changing the way we use our computers,” the company said in its announcement. The glasses’ operating system helps you get things done faster based on what they see and what they know about your behaviors. Snap also says that its smartglasses can keep you in the moment with friends and family unlike phones and computers, because they put digital devices in your view of the real world. Additionally, the company believes that Specs will help reduce waste over time because its digital tools can replace physical items, such as manuals and whiteboards.

Snap did not say whether Specs Inc. has any investors lined up, but it is already hiring more than 100 papers around the world. The new subsidiary is expected to launch Snap’s next generation of standalone AR glasses sometime this year. The company’s CEO Evan Spiegel previously said that the model will be lighter, have a smaller form factor and have more capabilities than older smartglasses, which are mostly focused on the developer.
