Thousands of popular products are being pulled from shelves after federal officials discovered evidence of rodent and bird contamination at a Midwest distribution center.
Minnesota-based Gold Star Distribution Inc. issued one extensive memory covering food and beverages, health and beauty products, household goods and more, according to a Dec. 26 notice from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled items, distributed to stores in Minnesota, North Dakota and Indiana, include a wide range of grocery items including Diet Coke, Nutella, Froot Loops, Pringles, Cheerios, Folgers instant coffee, Sour Patch Kids, Fiji Water, Jolly Ranchers and Skittles.

Also includes hair gel, mouthwash, pregnancy tests and deodorant.
The FDA said products stored in the warehouse may have been exposed to “unsanitary conditions” such as rodent droppings, rodent urine and bird droppings.
“People who handle or consume the products could become seriously ill from the adulteration of pests, including rodents, birds and insects,” the announcement states. “These conditions create a significant risk that products stored in the facility may have been contaminated with dirt and harmful microorganisms.”

On Jan. 22, the FDA classified the recall as Class II, meaning the products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to People Magazineciting the FDA website.

The recall announcement comes amid a string of other recent recall notices issued by federal regulators.

The FDA recently announced a voluntary recall of more than 80,000 McCafé Premium Roast Decaffeinated K-Cup pods sold by Keurig Dr Pepper after the company discovered that the pods could contain regular and full-caffeinated coffee despite being labeled as decaffeinated.
More than 13,000 pounds of ready-to-eat grilled chicken breasts were also recently recalled over fears they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, according to the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
