Yes, the Object 279 is worth the money, but it depends on the type of player and their playstyle in War Thunder. While it may be useful for experienced tank players who know how to maneuver large vehicles on the battlefield, new or casual players may find it disappointing as it can be easily shot down without proper maneuverability. If you’re hoping to get Object 279 to do blind attacks without caring about incoming damage, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.
In this guide, we’ll break down Object 279’s stats and discuss its overall performance in combat.
War Thunder: What is Object 279?

The Object 279 was an experimental heavy tank developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s to replace the T-10. Designed for nuclear age warfare, this heavy tank features an angular hull designed to deflect blast waves, a unique four-rail suspension system designed to handle heavy gravel and snow, and a self-sealing fuel tank system. The project was eventually shut down, but not before a prototype was produced.
In War Thunder, the heavy tank Object 279 was introduced in update 1.9 “Viking’s Wrath”, making it one of the rarest and most unique vehicles in the game.
Object 279 Firepower
The biggest selling point of the Object 279 heavy tank is its 130mm M-65 gun, which has extremely powerful attack power. APCBC bullets are capable of providing comparable penetration to APFSDS bullets, resulting in a one-hit kill in most cases. The presence of two aircraft stabilizers, a rangefinder and a rapid reloading system (up to 8.6 seconds for the Ace Crew) make the tank extremely lethal in medium and long-range combat scenarios.
The tank is also equipped with a 14.5mm KPVT machine gun, capable of penetrating light vehicles, helicopters and light tanks like other light automatic artillery pieces.

Armor of Objects 279
The armor of Object 279 is impressive and nearly impenetrable even against modern tanks. However, if players know exactly where to hit with ammo like APFSDS and HEAT-FS, they can easily penetrate the thick shields and take down the Object 279. So if you want to use this as a tough heavily armored tank then this is it, but it won’t make you immune.
Mobility and handling of objects279
For a heavy tank, the Object 279 is quite maneuverable on the battlefield. Thanks to its 1,000 horsepower engine, it can reach speeds of approximately 55 km/h and can break away from enemies at a reverse speed of 18 km/h. But overall, it’s a clunky machine, especially on uneven terrain and close-quarters maps.

Combat performance of Object 279 in War Thunder

The Soviet Type 279 heavy tank is best used at long range like a turreted destroyer. Stabilizers and frontal armor allow you to attack effectively.
Overall, the Object 279 performs strongly in the lower tiers of play and can easily dominate objectives in War Thunder, while the upper tiers require smart positioning and a lot of patience.
While the Object 279 Heavy Tank is no longer the unstoppable beast it once was, it’s still one of the deadliest heavy tanks in War Thunder. So if you want to buy a rare and unique tank and run around with it, the Soviet Type 279 heavy tank is worth the money. But if you want a user-friendly vehicle that’s easy to use, then you should probably look at something else.
