Dead bird found on Central Florida’s Space Coast, sparking fears of possible incident bird flu outbreak.

While no cases have been confirmed, the nonprofit Florida Wildlife Hospital said samples from dead birds found in Brevard County have been sent for testing.

The group said mass migration from northern regions could bring the virus into the state.

Tracy Frampton, executive director of Florida Wildlife Hospital, said Fox 35 Orlando Migratory birds are being closely monitored.

“It spreads very easily and if they brought it here from the north it would definitely be a problem so we’re always vigilant,” Frampton said.

She said the disease affects the brain and neurological problems have been noted in the past. Bird flu last broke out in Florida in 2022, when thousands of birds died.

“They can’t keep their heads upright. They’re spinning around and they might even fall over, and it really messes with their nervous system,” Frampton said.

Local beachgoer Michael Shay found several dead birds on the beach last week, just a few feet apart from each other.

“It’s very disgusting, very frustrating,” he said.

Shea said he witnessed dead pelicans, seagulls and gannets.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials told Fox Orlando that bird flu does not spread easily from birds to humans, but urged the public to avoid contact with sick or dead birds while the situation is reviewed.

Meanwhile, Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan held a news conference Monday to discuss the deaths of at least a dozen swans in Orlando. Lake Eola Park died in a downtown park in recent days. The cause is unclear, but Sheehan speculates it could be bird flu.

She said the swan’s body was being stored for a post-mortem examination.

Avian influenza has also been reported to have been confirmed in poultry flocks in other parts of the country. federal data Nearly 2,000 chicken flocks across the country have tested positive since 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
