Some of Trump’s unfulfilled threats reflect a broader approach from a president with a track record of using high taxes to force other countries to innovate. trade deals, one-up measures in retaliation or even punish political critics. At the same time, they come as a growing list of tariffs is already in place – from Trump’s punitive measures to new tariffs of imported metalsof tit-for-tat levies with the main US trading partners like China – sinking consumers and businesses around the world into uncertainty.

Here’s what Trump said when announcing some of his biggest (yet unfulfilled) tariff threats and promises this year, and where things stand now.

External Revenue Service

200% tariff on European wine, Champagne and spirits

Trump’s 200% tariff threat on European alcohol never materialized. But the spirits are not included in the EU-US trade deal hit in the summer, which sets a 15% rate of most European imports.

100% tariff on foreign made films

What happened: Despite Trump’s repeated threats, the US has yet to impose 100% tariffs on foreign films. After his initial May promise to begin the process, the White House said no final decision made. It is also unclear what the US will do tax a film made abroad.

Tariffs on pharmaceutical drugs

What happened: The president did not sign an executive order imposed a 100% tariff on pharma products on October 1 and, so far, no tax has been put in place. But Trump has suggested it before high taxes on pharmaceutical drugs reach the road, told CNBC in August he will start by charging a “small tariff” and possibly raise the rate up to 250%. Meanwhile, trade agreements with specific countries set their own rates or exceptions – in the UK, for example, ensuring a 0% tariff of all British drugs exported to the US over a three-year period. The administration also announced the deals with certain companies with promises of low drug prices.

100% tariff on computer chips

In his words:

What happened: A sweep 100% of computer chips have not been used. When announcing his plans to impose the tax in August, Trump was not specific about the timing. and other details remain scarce.

$2,000 tariff dividend
