Back in the 1970s, Philippe Petit did a dangerous rope work between the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, a feat recorded in the famous 2008 documentary Man on Wire. In 2018, Free Solo offers a look at another kind of daredevil, Alex Honnold, a world-famous rock climber famous for free soloing, the act of climbing without ropes or harness. The film follows Honnold on his quest to solo climb El Capitan, a towering 3,000-foot cliff in Yosemite National Park, and the toll it takes on his body and mind. Free Solo comes to Netflix Jan. 1, so you can stream it before you tune in to Skyscraper Live on Jan. 23, a Netflix special event in which Honnold will attempt to scale one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, the 1,667-foot-tall Taipei 101, without ropes, live on camera.
