Arne Slott believe Liverpool He will continue to improve as the season progresses and he is confident his summer signings will grow into their roles as familiarity and consistency grow.
This Premier League The champions are fourth in the table ahead of Thursday’s clash with Leeds and are unbeaten in seven games in all competitions, with recent performances suggesting a gradual return to form after a turbulent start to the campaign.
Slott has seen encouraging signs from new arrivals such as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ektic and is sure there is more to come from them in the second half of the season.
Asked if those players could still improve, he said: “Yes, yes, absolutely. It’s not just for the new players. If you bring in a lot of new players and leave a lot of players, usually if I do my job well, they’ll play better football while they’re here and when they have more training and playing time.”
The Liverpool head coach emphasized the importance of consistency, pointing to recent history as proof that time brings success. “History has shown many times that the longer players play with you the better chance you have of winning something,” he said.
“If you add players to what you have, there’s a serious chance of improvement. If you change, like we did, it takes time. And usually it gets better after a certain period of time.”
Slott also acknowledged the impact of injuries on his squad, and revealed that some of the absentees will not appear again this season. “Unfortunately for Giovanni Leone we won’t see him this season and Alex (Isaac) will take a long time to see him again,” he said, adding that the financial context around departures and arrivals was significant, even if results are now starting to reflect that investment.
Despite Liverpool’s improved form, recent wins against Tottenham and Wolves were marked by nervy endings, something thanks to the fine margins that define slot football.
“It tells you how important goals are in a low-scoring game,” he said. “A goal can change the momentum that we saw last week and (Saturday).”
He felt Liverpool had largely controlled both matches until conceding. “In both games, as far as we’re concerned it was a performance you like from a Liverpool team,” Sloat said.
“We didn’t score our first two chances. Goals have a big impact on the momentum of the game. Our last two games have shown that.”
Slott added that managing games more effectively is closely linked to squad depth and options available from the bench, especially given the current injury list. “One way of game management is the ability to make substitutions,” he said.
“Last year when we were one goal up I brought on Wataru Ando a few times. I said it already, I don’t know if anyone notices but we miss a lot of players. That’s why it’s special that the players who are fit bring these results.”
