Paramount Universal and CBS agreed in July to pay a $16 million advance to settle the president’s lawsuit against the network over how “60 Minutes” edited and published an interview with then-Democratic rival Kamala Harris in 2024. Trump’s team initially sought $10 billion in damages, claiming the network’s use of edited clips from a single response about Israel amounted to “election interference.” Trump’s legal team supported the settlement as a victory for media accountability and the American people.

The settlement came the same month that the Trump administration’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved an $8 billion merger between Paramount and Skydance Media, with David Ellison in charge of the newly formed company.
Ellison then hand-picked Barry Weiss to take over CBS News, but Clooney was not a fan.
“Barrie Weiss is tearing apart CBS News as we speak,” Clooney told Variety . “I worry about how we inform ourselves and how we discern reality without a functioning media.”
