With Australia having retained the Ashes and leading England 3-1 in the ongoing five-Test series, Head has shifted focus to repairing off-field relationships. The explosive batsman said he hopes the two teams can have a drink together after the New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
As quoted by The Australian newspaper, Travis Head said: “It’s definitely mutual respect. I get on really well with a couple of them. Have some really good relationships with both teams. I’m looking forward to having a beer with Ducky (Ben Duckett). So, yeah, it’s going to be a great moment. Knowing we’ve won the series, obviously it’s nice to go there.”
An event that threatens tradition: Bairstow’s escape
This friendly tradition came to an end during the 2023 Ashes in England, largely due to Alex Carey’s controversial attack on Jonny Bairstow at Lord’s. Bairstow, thinking the ball was dead, strayed from his crease while trying to evade Cameron Green’s delivery, only to be run out by the Australian wicketkeeper at Home of Cricket.
The dismissal sparked a heated debate about “cricketing” and sportsmanship. The consequences are serious. Australia’s players were abused by members in Lord’s Hall, with England manager Brendan McCallum saying he couldn’t imagine having a friendly drink after what happened.

The history of friendship: an unforgettable ashes drinking party
The tradition of sharing a drink after an intense Ashes series is legendary. From Ian Botham and Dennis Lillee to legendary players such as Shane Warne and Kevin Pietersen, there are unforgettable stories of players who put aside their rivalries to share beers and stories in the dressing room.
It is a ritual that symbolizes the unique balance of fierce competition and the deep respect between players and opponents that defines the Ashes.
Why this tradition is more important than ever
In an age of constant media scrutiny and dense social media followings, these moments of informal connection are important. The main reason is that several players from England and Australia may not play in the next Ashes, so it is important to revive this tradition.
However, the ongoing Ashes series is far calmer, healthier and more respectful than the heated clashes of the past, with both teams focusing more on cricket than clashes. Only minor decisions were discussed and the controversy surrounding the fourth Test in Melbourne, which ended in two days.
