The Boston Red Sox continue to be in the market for infield players as they have interest in All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, who is an American League East free agent after the 2025 season.
Red Sox trade first baseman Wilson Contreras earlier this month to bolster their infield options. While the Red Sox have been linked to a Bregman reunion, the Red Sox are expected to sign Japanese free agent infielder Kazuma Okamoto, according to Yahoo Sports Japan.
Okamoto, whose signing deadline ends in early January, has hit 30 homers in nine of 11 seasons, slashing .277/.361/.522 in his NPB career. According to the latest reports, the Japanese infielder is in the United States holding face-to-face talks with teams interested in signing him.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are also pursuing St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan. The Red Sox have traded Donovan’s former Cardinals teammate, sonny gray and Wilson Contreras this offseason.
Donovan is expected to make $5,750,000 in 2026 with two years remaining on his contract. Boston is considered one of the front-runners for the All-Star infielder after talks with the Seattle Mariners over a potential trade reportedly stalled.
Cardinals trade talks for Brendan Donovan stalled as Wilson Contreras moves to Boston
In addition to the Red Sox, Seattle Mariners and san francisco giants Brendan Donovan has been linked to this offseason. However, trade talks with the Giants and Mariners have reportedly stalled after Wilson Contreras was linked to the Red Sox.
“Shortly after the winter meetings, Donovan’s appeal appeared to be growing,” The Athletic’s Katie Wu and Will Salmon wrote. “The Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants emerged as the front-runners. However, as the Contreras trade began to take shape, negotiations stalled.”
It remains to be seen whether the Red Sox will trade a third Cardinals player this offseason or prioritize re-signing Alex Bregman in free agency.
