A truce reached over the weekend remains in effect, with Thailand handing over 18 Cambodian soldiers who had been held captive for 155 days.

Thailand has released 18 Cambodian soldiers detained since July, three days after the two countries agreed to a renewed ceasefire to end weeks of deadly border clashes, officials said.

Thailand’s foreign ministry confirmed on Wednesday it had repatriated the soldiers to Cambodia, calling the move a “show of goodwill and trust-building,” according to a statement.

The soldiers arrived on Cambodian soil at 10am (03:00GMT) on Wednesday after 155 days in Thai custody, the Ministry of Defense said.

Border clashes resumed earlier this month after the collapse of a ceasefire agreement that U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim helped broker to halt the previous round of fighting in July.

The fighting killed at least 101 people on both sides and displaced more than 500,000 people. The fighting included fighter jets, rocket exchanges and artillery attacks.

The two Southeast Asian neighbors agreed to a renewed ceasefire over the weekend, which came into effect at noon on Saturday (05:00 GMT).

The soldiers were due to return on Tuesday, but Thailand delayed the transfer over alleged ceasefire violations, which Cambodia denies.
