PREMA Racing makes its IndyCar debut in 2025, with the Italian team fielding several cars driven by Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott. However, shortly after the season ended, reports of PREMA’s financial woes raised doubts about their IndyCar future. Doug Bolles recently came out and claimed that the future of the Italian team will be clear in a few weeks.
PREMA Racing has a long history in motorsport, having been established in 1983. The team initially competed in the Italian F3 Championship and expanded year by year. Currently, the Italian team competes in the FIA and Regional Formula Series.
PREMA has provided the stage for several top riders over the years, including Charles LeclercOscar Piastri, Denis Hauge, etc. PREMA has motorsport experience competing in the IndyCar Series and performed well in its first season.
Shortly after the 2025 season ended, reports began to circulate in the paddock regarding the uncertainty surrounding PREMA IndyCar’s future. The Italian team’s parent company is reportedly experiencing some financial difficulties.
IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles recently appeared on Marshall Pruett’s podcast and was asked about PREMA Racing’s future in the sport. Boles claimed the team was working on the problem, as he said,
“We had some really good conversations with their leadership and management at the end of the summer as they tried to figure out what 2026 was going to look like and continue to work toward that. We had a lot of conversations with Piers (Phillips) to understand where they were headed. I know they’re actively working on it. Uh, they’re not giving up. I think uh, they feel hopeful and certainly to your point of view, they’ve had a pretty successful first year.” (From 3:50)
Doug Boles went on to detail how PREMA is proud of Robert Shwartzman’s Indy 500 pole position. Boles revealed that the team will work to eliminate the shadow of uncertainty in the coming weeks.
“We’re hoping uh they’ll be back and uh you know, I think we’ll know in the next couple of weeks as things start to unfold,” Doug Boles said
PREMA Racing boss sees 2025 IndyCar season as successful debut year
Amid speculation surrounding IndyCar’s future, PREMA Racing boss Rene Rosin came out in November to confirm that the Italian team was considering its options but would do its best to remain in the series after a successful 2025 season.
“Honestly, we’re looking at and evaluating different solutions. I’d say the program has been a huge success throughout the year. We started from the ground up, got pole position in the Indy 500 and have stayed within (the top ten) for the past few races,” (Rosin said via Motorsport)
If PREMA continues for the 2026 season, they will join Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott, who have signed multi-year contracts ahead of the 2025 season.
