Rangers have appointed Stig Inge Bjørnebye as football consultant for an initial term of approximately six months.
It is understood the 56-year-old, who has made more than 300 appearances for clubs including Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers, will start working alongside the club’s existing football leadership at Ibrox this week.
Bjorneby has also served as sporting director at Rosenborg and most recently Danish club Aarhus.
sky sports news It is understood the former Norway international will work in an advisory and supportive capacity, reporting to chairman Andrew Cavenagh.
It is thought he will be tasked with providing further experience and perspective on football matters, including contributing to planning and activities ahead of the January transfer window.
Head coach Danny Rohr will also be involved in the transfer plan alongside Bjorneby and the recruitment team. However, it is understood that the final transfer decision will be made by chairman Andrew Cavenagh and deputy chairman Paraag Marathe.
Rangers still looking for new CEO and sporting director Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell were fired last month.
It is understood the search for a CEO is more in-depth than the search for an athletic director. However, Bjorneby’s appointment is not viewed as an interim athletic director role.
While Cavenagh has already met with a number of candidates, it is believed he is willing to wait to find the right option for the club.
Rangers are believed to be looking to add to a number of positions in the January transfer window as Rohr looks to strengthen the squad he inherited from Russell Martin.
Extras at the back, a number six in midfield and further attacking options are all being considered, but no regular starters under Rohr are expected to be sold.
