2008-2013
Mumbai Indians had a star-studded squad since the first season of the IPL, including players like Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya, but struggled in previous years, finishing fifth and seventh respectively.
Despite this, MI made a strong comeback the following season and made it all the way to the finals, setting up a rivalry with the Chennai Super Kings that continues to this day.
The 2010 season was the start of a decade for Mumbai Indians, with the team securing playoff berths in the next two seasons and winning their first IPL title in 2013.
As was the case with the team, MI did not start that particular season on a positive note, which led to Ricky Ponting handing over the captaincy to young Rohit Sharma, a decision that changed the fortunes of the team forever.
2014-2019
The following seasons, MI won three IPL titles every other year in 2015, 2017 and 2019, making it the team with the highest number of titles in the competition.
Coincidentally, two of the three wins came against the Chennai Super Kings when the MS Dhoni-led side was not part of the 2017 season when MI lifted the IPL trophy for the fourth time.
Interestingly, since Rohit took over as captain until 2020, MI has qualified for the playoffs in every edition except 2016 and 2018.
In two of those seasons, MI staged a magnificent comeback to finish in the top four after losing five games in the first half.
2020-2025
Mumbai Indians are the second team in the history of IPL to defend their title in 2020 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma
However, a lot has changed since then and Mumbai Indians are still looking for their sixth title but failed to qualify for the 2021, 2022 and 2024 playoffs.
One of the big and controversial changes that MI has gone through during this period is the captaincy, with Hardik Pandya set to captain the team in 2024, replacing Rohit Sharma.
Although the fans are not in a good mood, they seem to have accepted the fact that Hardik will lead the team from now on, which was evident from their reaction last season.
Mumbai Indians retained players
Mumbai Indians have most of their bases covered with the options they have retained in the form of Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma.
