2008-2013

RCB, the team that kicked off the IPL, faced KKR in the first match in the league’s history, facing batsman Brendon McCullum, who scored the highest individual score in IPL at that time with 158 runs.

Having said that, Royal Challengers Bangalore made a strong comeback the next season in South Africa and reached the finals of the tournament but lost to eventual champions Deccan Chargers while chasing a small total.

The previous runner-up also continued his good performance in the third season, entering the top four and entering the knockout stage of the event.

In 2011, RCB, led by former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori, reached the finals for the second time in four seasons but again failed to cross the finish line against the Chennai Super Kings.

In the following years, the then-Virat Kohli-led side performed sub-par as they failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing fifth in back-to-back games.

2014-2019

The story repeated itself till 2014, with the captain himself putting in a special effort to help the team secure a playoff berth the following year, thanks to David Warner’s brain-destroying moment in a shortened must-win game against SRH.

Virat Kohli was almost a one-man show for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as far as the IPL 2016 season was concerned, as he reached another level as a player, scoring over 900 runs, 973 to be precise, and leading the team to the finals.

Even though RCB was still far away from its maiden IPL title, Kohli made a season of his own with the way he batted in a season that is still talked about by the masses to this day.

Having said that, the next three seasons were forgettable for Royal Challengers as their performances were very inconsistent.

2020-2025

Things have been very different since 2020 and RCB’s performances have become very consistent, which is evident from the fact that the team has qualified for the playoffs in five of the last six editions of the IPL.

The Rajat Patidar side will enter the upcoming season as defending champions, having won their first title last year by defeating Kings XI Punjab in the final.

Players retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore has retained a total of 17 players for IPL 2026, including former captain Virat Kohli, experienced fast bowler Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and champion captain Rajat Patidar.
