Anyone who has used a AI image or video generator knowing that these tools are often the opposite of accurate. If you’re using an AI generator with a specific idea in mind, you’ll likely need to do a lot of work to bring that exact vision to life.
Adobe is convinced that it can make its AI hub, Firefly, a place where AI can be customized and precise, which is the company’s goal with the release of new AI video editing tools on Tuesday.
In the run up to 2025, Adobe has quietly emerged as one of the best places to work generative AI tools. With Firefly subscriptions starting at $10 per month, it’s an affordable program that provides integration with leading models from Google, OpenAI, Runway, Luma and many other leading AI companies. It expands its roster with Topaz Labs’ Astra (available at Firefly Boards) and Flux 2.1 from Black Forest Labs, available on Firefly and Photoshop desktop.
The partnerships help make Firefly an all-in-one hub for creators to use AI, said Steve Newcomb, vice president of product for Firefly, in an exclusive interview. Just as Photoshop is the “career partner” of photographers, Firefly aims to be the partner of AI video and image creators.
“If you’re a photographer, (Photoshop) has everything you want. It has all the tooling, all the plugins, in one place with one subscription. You don’t have to subscribe to 25 different photography things,” Newcomb said. “So for us, Firefly, our philosophy is, how do we make that home?”
One way is through collaboration with AI companies, similar to Photoshop plug-ins. Proper editing tools are another, he said.
That’s why Adobe is trying to facilitate the editing of AI-generated content. Hallucinations are common in AI-generated images and videos, such as the disappearance and reappearance of objects, strange blurs and other inaccuracies. For professional creators using Adobe, the inability to edit hallucinations makes AI almost unusable for final projects.
In my own testing, I’ve always found the editing tools to be rudimentary, at best. At worst, they are completely absent, especially for newer AI video technologies. Firefly’s new quick-edit-based editing for AI videos, announced Tuesday, is one way to get that hands-on control.
If you’ve edited Firefly images by default, the video setup will feel very familiar. Even if you don’t, speed-based editing is a fancy term for asking AI to edit things like you would when talking to a chatbot. on Google nano banana pro in Gemini is an example of an AI tool that allows you to edit through prompts.
Firefly video editing has the added bonus of letting you switch between models for edits: You can create with Firefly and edit with Runway’s Aleph, for example.
As with any AI chatbot or tool, instant-based editing is not always accurate. But it’s a nice option without having to give up Firefly for Premiere Pro.
Notice how the base edit quickly turns the plane into a sneaker in this example.
The plan is to go beyond quick-based editing, Newcomb said. Additional AI-based precision editing tools for Firefly are essential, allowing you to make more minute changes. What makes this possible is something called layer-based editing, a behind-the-scenes technology that enables easier, detailed changes to AI-generated images and videos.
Adobe plans to implement layer-based editing in the future, which will likely be the foundation for future AI video editing tools. The goal is to make it easier to stay working in Firefly “until the last mile” of editing, Newcomb said.
“We can run the gamut of the precision continuum to the end, and just think of the trigger as one of many tools. But it’s not the only tool,” Newcomb said.
Meanwhile, there is another piece of video editing news that will help you create more accurate AI videos.
AI video editing without Premiere Pro skills
Adobe also brought its full AI video editor into beta on Tuesday, the next step toward creating editable and, therefore, usable AI video.
Debut of the annual company Max conference in October, the video editor is now launching a public beta. It sits in between basic video editors and the feature-stuffed Premiere Pro. It’s great for AI enthusiasts who want more editing firepower than you can get with OpenAI or Google, without requiring Premiere Pro skills.
The video editor is meant to help you put all the pieces of your project in one place. It has a multitrack timeline for you to compile all your clips and audio tracks. That is especially important because, as long as you can do it yourself AI speech and soundtrackFirefly AI videos do not natively generate sound. (You can use I saw 3 or Sora 2 in Firefly to create those initial clips with audio, though.) You can also export in different aspect ratios.
“Consider the video editor as one of our cornerstone releases that helps us move toward a place, a home, where you can have a subscription and get every model you need to get the job done,” Newcomb said.
