Indian travelers are reshaping their winter holiday plans this season, with a notable shift towards destinations that combine ease of access, distinct cultural experiences and value for money. New data from visa processing platform Atlys shows that several countries have seen strong growth in interest compared to the 2024 winter travel period, indicating a wider diversification in where Indians are choosing to travel.
According to Atlys’ internal analysis of winter travel, Sri Lanka has become the fastest growing destination on the platform, registering a five-fold jump from last winter. Travelers are increasingly drawn to the island nation for its beaches, affordability and proximity to India.
South Africa and Oman have also seen a strong boost, growing 2.9 times and 2.6 times, respectively. Data suggests growing interest in nature-led experiences, warm-weather getaways and short-haul alternatives during the winter months.
Georgia continues to increase in popularity, registering a 2.1x growth, while Hong Kong has seen a 1.88x increase. More culturally immersive and unconventional destinations are also gaining traction, with Uzbekistan growing 1.97x and Morocco 1.87x. Japan, boosted by its winter landscapes and seasonal festivals, recorded a 1.79 times increase over last year.
These destinations represent those with the highest winter-to-winter growth on the Atlys platform. At the same time, traditional favorites such as the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the Schengen region and the United States continue to attract steady interest, pointing to an expansion rather than a replacement of destination options for Indian travelers.
“We are seeing a fascinating shift in winter travel behavior this year,” said Santosh Hegde, Head of Marketing, Atlys. “Travellers are discovering destinations that offer depth, diversity and comfort – whether it’s Sri Lanka for a quick beach getaway or Georgia and Uzbekistan for culture and adventure. The growth we’re seeing isn’t about replacing classic favourites, it’s about expanding the map. Indians are more open than ever to exploring places that were traditionally off the radar.”
The rise of new winter favorites reflects a broader shift in how Indians approach international travel in 2025. With easier visa access and improved global mobility, travelers are showing more curiosity and confidence to explore beyond familiar routes, making the winter season one of the most dynamic periods for outbound travel.
