Empowering women during childbirth




In a special issue, we focus on childbirth and how much control women actually have over this process. In France, doulas have become increasingly popular in recent years. They provide emotional and practical support during pregnancy and childbirth, but not medical assistance. So where doulas fit into the birth experience; and how can we better empower women who give birth? Annette Young poses these questions to Professor Soo Downe, a specialist midwife from the University of Lancashire, and Charlotte Brielle, founder and chief executive of Wombs of the World, an NGO that promotes the use of doulas.
