Just like the debate about the NFL playing field Next, the league unveiled a plan to bring more consistency to all stadiums.
According to reports, the new enhanced standards must be met by 2028 National Football League, and will be set up through laboratory and field testing.
NFL Director of Fields Nick Pappas shared some details about the program’s rollout plans.
Each team will have access to an “approved and accredited NFL field library” before the start of the 2026 season. Any new areas must meet these standards immediately, and all teams will have two years to achieve them. Both grass and artificial turf fields will comply with the new standards.

Pappas added that the fields will undergo extensive testing and be approved by the NFLPA Joint Committee.
“It’s kind of like a red, yellow and green effect, where we’re obviously trying to phase out those areas that we think are less desirable than the new areas that are coming into the industry,” he said.

“This is a big step forward for us. I think it’s a great outcome of the work of the Joint Surface Committee, the deployment and development of the equipment to determine the appropriate metrics and ultimately give us a way to substantiate field quality more than ever before.”
Pappas said the field has been tested in the laboratory and in the field using two main tools. One is called BEAST, a traction testing device that replicates the movements of NFL players. The other is called a STRIKE impact tester, which helps determine how sturdy each area is.

The league’s goal is to find as consistent a field as possible for all 30 NFL stadiums and at each stadium throughout the season. Pappas said the “key pillars” of the course were optimizing playability, reducing the risk of injury and player feedback.
The NFL has no plans to require natural grass. Dr. Allen Hills, the league’s chief medical officer, said that despite players’ general preference for grass and complaints about the surfaces at venues like MetLife Stadium, where the New York Giants and Jets play, there are no “statistically significant differences” in lower-body injuries or concussions that can be attributed to the type of playing surface or the specific surface.
“Surface is only one driver of these lower extremity injuries,” Sears said. “There are a lot of other factors, including player load, previous history and fatigue, positional suitability and worn boots. So surface is a component, but it’s a complex equation.”
