Caitlin Clark was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year without much competition, but one vote-getter caused much controversy over the summer.
Seventy-four sports journalists from The Associated Press and its members voted for the award. Clark gets 35 votes, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles Ranked second with 25.
But Olympic gold medal boxer Iman Khalif finished third with four votes.

Khalif qualified for the Paris Olympics, but was disqualified from the 2023 world championships ahead of the gold medal match due to gender eligibility issues, which raised questions about Khalif’s gender.

One boxer, Angela Carini, gave up her fight with Khalif in Paris, saying “one punch hurt too much”.
Khalif won gold in Paris and is not the only boxer to win women’s gold only to be disqualified for failing a gender qualification test. Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting also sparked similar outrage by winning gold at another women’s heavyweight competition in Paris.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended Khalif and Yuting’s participation in the women’s competition until the end.

The IOC said during the competition: “These two athletes are the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. They were suddenly disqualified without any due process towards the end of the 2023 IBA World Championships.”
Khalif later won the gold medal. Khalif did not lose a round on any scoreboard in Paris.
After Carini won her eighth Italian women’s title earlier this month, she claimed the victory was her “revenge”.
