‘People ask why I don’t move’: Life in the shadow of Auschwitz




Oswiecim in southern Poland is best known as the place where the Nazis built the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. But for the roughly 40,000 people who call Oswiecim home, it’s a place where daily life goes on like anywhere else. As January 27, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, some hope that others will soon begin to see Oswiecim as something more than a site of Nazi atrocities.
