American Airlines on Tuesday reported a widespread “technical issue” affecting all flights as many Americans begin traveling for the busy holidays.
An air traffic control system command center counseling shows that the airline issued a national stopover on Christmas Eve.
“We are currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights,” he said airline wrote to X. “Your safety is our highest priority, once this has been rectified we will have you safely on your way to your destination.”

“Our team is currently working to achieve this,” the airline added in a second post. “No estimated time frame has been provided, but they are trying to fix it as soon as possible.”

The airline did not immediately provide additional information on the issue.
The Federal Aviation Administration also offered little information. “American Airlines is reporting a technical issue and has requested a nationwide ground stop. Please contact American Airlines for more information,” the agency said in a statement.
From 7:10 in the morning, American Airlines 1,979 outages have been reported, according to DownDetector, a website that provides an overview of problems and outages with a variety of services.

Dozens of social media users reported being stuck aboard planes on the tarmac or being sent back to the airport gate. The American Airlines X account responded to many of the users, apologizing and assuring them that their team was working to fix the outage.
