A Polish army pilot died after his F-16 jet crash Poland.

The general commander of the armed forces said in a statement Thursday that the accident involved aircraft from the 31st tactical air base in Poznan, Western Poland. No bystanders were injured.

“Polish army pilot died in a crash on an F-16 aircraft – an official always serves his country with dedication and courage. I pay tribute to his memory.” Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X after arriving at the crash site at Radom airport in central Poland.

Firefighters arrived at the scene after the plane did not recover after running to the runway and hit the ground. The accident occurred around 19:30 local time (17:30 GMT).

Videos on social media showed an F-16 fighter diving with a nose and then hit a flame ball during a practice before this year’s Radom Air Show.

Local reports state that the pilot, which is part of NATO air force, was called the “Tiger Demonstration” and did not eject from the plane before the crash.

Airshow Radom 2025, which will be held this weekend, has been cancelled.

Poland first bought the US-made F-16, which is NATO’s jet key National Defense Strategyin 2003, has been upgrading its fleet since, as its defense spending increased after Russia’s 2023 invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

In an article on X on X, Italy’s General Staff, a NATO member, expressed “deep sadness” after the crash.

Latvian’s defense minister visited Polish troops in Eastern European countries earlier Thursday, and he also posted on X that he felt “deeply sad” about his death.

“My thoughts are with his family and gay soldiers,” he said.
