Nike CNBC learned that it is planning to lay off employees as part of its efforts to re-align and re-grow the business.
The cuts will affect less than 1% of Nike’s employees. It is not clear how much work will be affected. Nike’s EMEA and Converse businesses will not be affected.
“As we shared in our fourth-quarter earnings, Nike (Nike, Inc.) is re-tuning. The move we have made is to work to win and create the next great chapter for Nike,” the company told CNBC in a statement. “This new form is designed to bring sports and sports culture back to center to connect more deeply with athletes and consumers and to provide us with space to create something that only Nike.”
In February last year, Nike announced plans Leave 2% of employeesas part of a wider restructuring, or more than 1,500 jobs. The latest round of layoffs is part of Hill’s efforts to transform the company’s internal team.
Under former CEO John Donahoe, Nike has changed the way its business is segmented. It is not divided by sports, but divides it into women, men and children, as part of a broader effort to expand its lifestyle business.

Hill, a long-time Nike veteran, is now pulling out the work, so the business is focused only on sports and culture. The company said the leader was identified as the leader of the new team in July after Hill shared his vision in June.
In a memo to staff, Nike said that as part of the change, some employees will hold new positions or levels, report to new managers or join new teams.
Employees will learn whether they are affected in the conversation by September 8. Most new characters will take effect on September 21.
“To make room for these conversations, work next week at office locations in the U.S. and Canada unless your leader informs otherwise,” the memo said.
Since gaining the helm of the world’s largest sportswear brand, Hill has been performing the task of reversing the ongoing decline in sales, reigniting innovation and winning wholesale partners.

Hill said the company will be organized into “sports-obsessed teams” that will “drive the continuous flow of innovative products from all three brands.”
