Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome was undergoing surgery after a “serious training crash” that sent British cyclists airlifting to a hospital in France.
Froome’s team, Israel-Premier Technology, said Thursday that he was “stable and had no head injuries” but added that the scan confirmed pneumothorax, five ruptured ribs and lumbar fractures.
Froom was taken to the Sea Hospital by helicopter Wednesday after the accident, which happened while he was training near San Raphael. “No other cyclists or vehicles are involved,” his team said.
His last win was Giro d’Italia in 2018. He won Spain’s Vuelta twice in 2011 and 2017, booking his four tour wins, the first win in 2013, followed by a hat trick of 2015-17.
The 40-year-old Froome has never returned to his previous best after training on the 2019 Dauphin Standard, which he used to fine-tune his bids to win a record fifth Tour title. In the accident, he broke his right femur, elbow and ribs.
This latest event could end the end of Froom’s career as his contract with Israel-Premier Technology is about to end.
