UK, France and Germany move to reimpose UN sanctions

Britain, France and Germany have begun the process of resuming major sanctions on Iran – according to a 2015 deal – tensions have once again escalated Iran’s nuclear program.

The move will trigger the so-called kickback mechanism, which could lead to a recovery of sanctions within 30 days.

The three countries (participants in 2015) warned two weeks ago that they were ready to do so unless Iran agreed to a “diplomacy solution” by the end of August.

Since Iran’s talks with the United States on its nuclear program, Iran has banned unsupported inspectors from entering its facilities since the bombing of Iran’s nuclear site in June.

Years of cruel economic sanctions were lifted in exchange for the curb of Iran’s nuclear program under an unsupported agreement between Iran and the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and the European Union.

But the deal was cancelled after Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out and reimposed nuclear-related sanctions in his first term in 2018. Iran has stepped up its nuclear activities to exacerbate the new crisis.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the Western Powers and Global Nuclear Bodies said they do not believe that Iran’s nuclear program has purely peaceful purposes. Iran strongly insists that it is not seeking nuclear weapons, and that its nuclear program is just a civilian.
