Force majeure: an event that is above and beyond our control. That term that insurers borrowed from the French to describe what might otherwise be described as an act of God. The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles certainly qualify as force majeure: an explosive cocktail of prolonged drought, low humidity and hurricane-force winds combined to cause an unprecedented catastrophe. But is mother nature to blame for everything?
