Hyce is a startup with a vision. Launched at CES 2025, the company has created a delivery lockbox made for modern day pirates on the balcony — and it’s packed with smart tech to solve a problem 1 in 6 Americans have encountered.

Here’s why it might be the best defense against porch pirates.

Hyve’s original take on a century-old solution

I noticed several interesting add-ons in the new locker, including:

1. A carbon fiber tether to keep the box secure. Shipping lockboxes aren’t exactly easy to move, but if you’re worried about thieves grabbing the entire box, then you can use this quarter-inch cable to tie it to a column or railing for storage.
2. An accelerometer to sound a siren when the box is disturbed. Tamper alert will also send you a phone alert to let you know if someone unauthorized is trying to break in.
3. An app to “disarm” the box for deliveries or send special unlock codes to delivery services, family, friends and others. When a code is used, the owner will get an alert update. The app can also connect to some existing home security systems, but details are light for now.
4. A small window on the top of the pod so that the delivery person can take a photo to confirm the delivery, which satisfies the requirements of the owner and the delivery company (this feature is very common sense, and I have not seen which is another box with it).
5. Compatibility with return package pickup software.

These additions make Hyve stand out among the many shipping boxes, but Hyve Security also wants to accomplish something more ambitious. The pod was created to encourage retailers to spend less money on outer packaging. If everyone had a shipping box, for example, companies could reduce packaging materials designed to protect from the elements or theft, helping the environment and lowering the package’s carbon footprint.

That’s a lofty goal, but it shows where Hyve Security is coming from. The company was founded by Melissa Kieling (founder of the freezable food bag company Packit) and her son to solve this specific problem at home. You won’t have to wait long if you want to opt in: Buyers can purchase the Hyve delivery pod starting in June 2025, for $300.
