According to reports, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and buildings shook.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit Shigatse, Tibet.

The quake occurred at 9:05 a.m. local time (01:05 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to a separate notice from the China Seismological Network Center.

According to Indian media reports, Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) away, also felt strong shaking, and local residents fled their homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey located the epicenter of the earthquake near Lobuche, Nepal, on the mountainous border with Tibet, China.

Shakes were reported in buildings in Kathmandu, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Lobuche.
