Dominique Pelicot was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging and raping his ex-wife Gisèle and inviting dozens of men to do the same over nearly a decade abusing her, among other charges.
Pellicott admitted the charges against him.
He is on trial along with 50 other men, most of whom deny rape charges. The French Avignon Municipal Court found 47 of the men guilty of rape, two men guilty of attempted rape, and two men guilty of sexual assault.
The defendants now have 10 days to appeal.
Most of the 50 came from towns and villages within a 50-kilometer (30-mile) radius of Pelicot’s own village of Mazan.
