Ollie Lawrence has apologized for his role in the incident that led to the jailing of England team-mate Alex Mitchell. Bath lost to Northampton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Lawrence and Mitchell clashed heads when the Saints scrum-half tackled the ball at Franklin Gardens, with the Bath center falling to the ground clutching his face after the collision.
Referee Anthony Woodthorpe showed Mitchell a yellow card and Lawrence appeared to smile at the decision, while teammate Finn Russell prepared to take the resulting penalty.
After being accused of overreacting, Lawrence used his X account to express his remorse.
“I apologize if my actions today offended anyone,” he wrote. “Looking back, I understand the frustration everyone expressed! I will do better.”
Earlier, Lawrence infuriated the home crowd with a shoulder charge on George Hendy that forced the full-back out of the game.
Saints beat Bath 35-34, with Finn Smith converting a late penalty to hand the league leaders their second defeat of the season.
