Kennedy Center cancels week-long event to celebrate LGBTQ+ people’s participation in World Pride Festival Washington, DCUnder the leadership of the Center in the change of focus and the Trump administration fired.

Several artists and producers involved in the center’s tapestries said their events were quietly cancelled or transferred to other venues. Proud Tapestry is scheduled to be cancelled from June 5 to 8.

The Capital Pride Alliance in Washington responded to the canceled incident and was separated from the Kennedy Center.

“We are a resilient community and we have found other avenues,” the league’s deputy director June Crenshaw told the Associated Press. “We are looking for another way to celebrate…but the fact that we have to manipulate this way is disappointing.”

The Kennedy Center website still has a wall-mounted Pride section and has a general description and link to the World Pride website. No additional information is provided on the website.

The Kennedy Center (including the President) has undergone a massive change, cancelled Donald Trump The president and chairman were fired in early February. Trump replaced most boards with loyalists, and later he elected the agency’s new chairman.

The World Pride event is held every two years, and this year’s event will be held from May 17 to June 8, with performances and celebrations planned in the national capital. But there are concerns about which reception participants will be given due to Trump administration policies targeting trans people and comments on the Kennedy Center tow performance.

“I know that DC as a community will be happy to host the world pride, but I know that the community is different from the government,” said Michael Roest, founder and director of the International Pride, which performed at the Kennedy Center on June 5, cancelled just days after Trump took control of the agency.

Roest told the Associated Press that he is in the final stages of the Planning Center performance. When Trump revealed on February 7 about leadership changes and his plans to modify institutional programming, he was waiting for the final contract.

He said the center became unresponsive.

On February 12, Roest said he received an email from Kennedy Center staff saying they were “no longer able to promote your contract at this time.”

“They went from being very eager to having nothing,” he told the Associated Press. “We haven’t heard anyone from the Kennedy Center since then, but that doesn’t stop us.”

After the cancellation, Roster said he was able to transfer the International Pride show to the Strathmore Theatre near Bethesda, Maryland.

Roest said he never had an explanation as to why the show was cancelled so late in the planning phase. He said his band no longer considers performing at the Kennedy Center, and most queer artists may make the same choice.

“To take this into account, it is necessary to issue a very, very public statement of inclusion from the board of directors,” he said. “Otherwise, it’s a hostile performance space.”

Crenshaw said some other events, including delayed story time and part of the display of AIDS memorial quilt, will be transferred to Chinatown’s World Pride Welcome Center.

Monica Alford is a senior arts and culture journalist and event planner who will organize events on June 8. Proud tapestriesbut said she also suddenly encountered a communication ending within a few days of Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center.

Alford has a long history at the Kennedy Center and organized its first ever resistance brunch on its rooftop last year. She said she sees the agency as her “national basis” and “a safe space for queer communities.” She also said she was disappointed to lose her partnership with the Kennedy Center.

“We are doing damage to the community — not just the queer community, but the entire community,” she told the Associated Press.

She said she is still finalizing the details of her event, saying “it’s family-friendly, like drag brunch to family-friendly, classic and sophisticated.”
