2026 Olympics: Canadians go for slopestyle, speed skating gold

What’s going on at the Olympics today

Good morning, I’m Verity Stevenson — a writer from Montreal. It’s only the third day of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Games, and a lot has already happened.

Yesterday started with the painful crash of the American skier Lindsey Vonn in the downhill where she broke her left leg. Vonn was airlifted by helicopter after agonizing minutes on the hillside.

In the rest of the day’s competition, several Canadian athletes did not fulfill their hopes and there were no new medals. Mixed doubles curling couple, Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant, were eliminated from playoff competition; veteran Canadian speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen placed in 13th place in the men’s 5000 meters final; and, although Canada was aiming for the podium in the team figure skating competition, it ended up falling one place to fifth.

The hardware count remains: one bronze medal for long track speed skating by Valérie Maltais on Saturday 🥉.

Today is a new day and there is still plenty of time for Olympic dreams to come true. Here’s some of what’s available:

Alpine skiing: The men’s downhill team medley begins at 4:30 a.m. ET, followed by the slalom at 8 a.m. ET.
Freestyle skiing: Megan Oldham and Naomi Urness compete in the women’s slopestyle final at 6:30 a.m. ET.
Speed Skating: Béatrice Lamarche is in the women’s 1,000 meters at 11:30 a.m. ET.
Sledding: Women’s singles at 11:00 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. ET.
Ski jumps: Men’s Normal Mountain Finals at 1:00 PM and 2:12 PM ET.
Figure skating: The ice dance begins at 1:20 PM ET.
Snowboarding: The women’s finals are in the big air at 1:30 p.m., 1:53 p.m. and 2:17 p.m. ET.
Curling: Round-robin mixed doubles matches continue throughout the day, but Canada is out.
Hockey: The Canadian women’s national team plays the Czech Republic at 3:10 PM ET.
